Self-care – what is it?
The term self-care is everywhere these days. It’s often used alongside ideas of self-love and being kind to ourselves, but it can be tricky to know what these concepts actually mean in our daily lives. Looking after our physical and mental wellbeing at university is crucial, especially as we draw closer to the end of the semester and deadlines loom large. At its heart, self-care is about not letting stress and work take over our lives, even during the busiest times, and it’s important to remember that self-care looks different for everyone.
Self-care can be as simple as eating nourishing foods, getting enough sleep, and letting yourself take a break when you’re feeling run-down. It could mean setting aside time to exercise or to go for a walk outdoors to clear your mind, or finding an enjoyable book to read that isn’t on your course list. Self-care also includes keeping your space tidy and pleasant to live in, or treating yourself to a little indulgence now and then. Whatever it may be, taking even small steps toward wellness can make a big difference. After all, if you don’t take the time to look after your wellness, you might end up having to make time to look after your illness.
At the end of the day, self-care means listening to what our mind and body need and giving ourselves a bit of flexibility in stressful periods. It’s about realising that productivity isn’t everything and that your health should be a priority. So, as you move through the rest of the semester, remember to check in with yourself and make space for whatever it is that helps you recharge. You deserve it, and it will help you be at your best when it matters most.
